A new film adaptation of Stephen King’s 1996 horror work “Desperation” has been set up at Searchlight with Sam Raimi set to produce reports The InSneider and THR.
The project marks the first time horror icons King and Raimi will be working together on a project. Joining them will be Raimi’s long-time producing partner Robert Tapert.
In addition, “Final Destination: Bloodlines” directors Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein are set to direct the feature, which will be penned by Ryan Brennan. The pair are attached to multiple projects right now, including “Metal Gear Solid,” “Gremlins 3,” “Long Lost” and an animated “Venom” film.
The original novel is set along the desolate Highway 50 in Nevada and follows several people who get abducted by Collie Entragian, the deputy of the fictional mining town of Desperation.
Entragian has been possessed by an evil being named Tak who can control native wildlife and must change hosts to keep itself alive. To escape, the captives must trap Tak in the place from where he came – deep within the mines.
The book was released simultaneously with the novel “The Regulators,” published by King under the name Richard Bachman, which features the same characters with different personalities in a completely different scenario. A film adaptation of that work was announced back in 2022 but doesn’t appear to have moved forward.
The property was previously adapted for the screen as a poorly received TV movie in 2006 with Ron Perlman as Entragian along with Tom Skerritt, Annabeth Gish and Steven Weber.
