By Back in mid-June, Amazon MGM Studios made headlines for dumping Luca Guadagnino’s movie “Artificial”.
The film looks into the meteoric rise of OpenAI – the company behind ChatGPT – along with the personal rivalries, ego clashes, and ethical tensions behind the scenes.
The cast includes Andrew Garfield as current CEO Sam Altman, Yura Borisov as machine learning engineer Ilya Sutskever, Ike Barinholtz as Elon Musk along with Monica Barbaro, Cooper Hoffman, Zosia Mamet, Chris O’Dowd, Cooper Koch, Billie Lourd, Jason Schwartzman and Mark Rylance.
Garfield, out promoting “The Magic Faraway Tree,” has now spoken about Amazon’s decision to abandon what was a nearly finished project – not long after the shopping giant committed to a $50 billion investment to OpenAI.
Garfield tells Variety, “I was, and I wasn’t surprised,” but won’t go so far as to be critical of Amazon’s conduct. He added, “They were nothing but supportive and nothing but encouraging while we were making the film”.
He adds that both he and Guadagnino have maintained strong relationships with Amazon executives and calls the split a simple mismatch: “There are certain things that fit certain places and don’t fit other places.”
He says he’s also thankful the studio helped the film land where it truly belonged. NEON picked up the $40 million-budgeted film with plans for an awards-qualifying run later this year.
