“Spawn” comic creator Todd McFarlane appeared at San Diego Comic-Con late last week where he offered some updates on how two screen adaptations of his celebrated comics are coming along.
First up, he says a long-delayed “Spawn” animated movie is actually mostly done and is now waiting for someone to come along, pick it up and finish it.
He confirmed to ComicBook.com that actors Keith David (Spawn) and Mark Hamill (Detective Twitch) have already completed recording their voice work for the movie. As a result, it wouldn’t take that much to complete and release:

“I don’t know if I’ve ever said, we developed, we were in the process of developing the return of this Spawn animation a while back. And then we, I got in a fight at the very end with the production and the lawyer, so I just bought it all back.
So I actually have a 90-minute animated show that’s all been drawn, minus the cells. All the voices have been done. Everything, like, we’re ready. All we need is a little bit of Foley, which is sound effects and stuff, and then hand it to a studio to actually draw, right?
We’re like, it’s just been sitting in a box waiting to go. I have just been sitting on that going, no, I think I need to get like the movie out, and then boom, once the [live-action] movie comes out, if there’s any success, then come out with that, but it’s sitting there. So anybody that wants to do animation, the first thing I’m going to do is say, hey, I’ve got this ready to tee up.”
McFarlane is famous for asserting strong creative control over the franchise which is why it has struggled to yield any further screen adaptations following the poor reception to the 1997 live-action film, and the far better received HBO adult animated series around the same time.
McFarlane also briefly spoke with Revenge Of about the status of a new live-action adaptation, saying he keeps rejecting new drafts of scripts and what he needs is to sit down with someone who will work with him:
“We need writers who will work with me. I am tired of giving my ideas away, sitting back waiting, and then they just hand it [over], and I read the script, and within 10 pages I go, ‘No, it’s off base.’ I need somebody that will work with me every day.”
He goes on to cite the success of films like “Obsession” and “Backrooms” to show how the project could be done quite cost-effectively.
