Following last night’s reactions, the actual reviews for Sony Pictures and Marvel’s “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” have arrived and, as expected, they’re slightly more mixed than the gushing out of the premiere.
With 61 reviews counted, the film sits at 91% on Rotten Tomatoes which is almost on par with Raimi’s original (90%), equal weakest of the Holland trilogy (92%, 91%, 93%). It’s notably behind Raimi’s second film (93%) and the Spider-Verse films (97%, 95%), though ahead of the two Garfield-led films (71%, 50%) and Raimi’s third (62%).
More telling is the average rating at 7.7/10. Compare that to the Maguire films (7.7, 8.6, 6.5), the Garfield films (6.7, 5.7), the three prior Holland films (7.7, 7.4, 7.9), and the Spider-Verse films (8.8, 8.6).
Over on Metacritic the film sits at 70/100. Compare that to the Maguire films (73, 83, 59), the Garfield films (66, 53), the three prior Holland films (73, 69, 71), and the Spider-Verse films (87, 86).
In other words, these are about on par with the previous Holland films or the first Raimi movie – not in the league of the adored Spider-Verse films and second Raimi film, but not a dud either.
