Following the casting of David Jonsson as the new Black Panther announcement on Saturday, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige has revealed that the casting has been in place for some time – around six months.
Speaking with Empire, Feige says Jonsson met with director Ryan Coogler in a ‘secret meeting’ in which the helmer quickly identified Jonsson to take over the role.
Feige admitted they “hadn’t started a search yet” and was waiting until Coogler was done with his awards campaigning for “Sinners,” ie. after the Oscars, to sit with Ryan and begin the process. Long before that though, Coogler called him:
“A month and a half or so before that process, he called me and said, ‘I found him’. I said, ‘What do you mean?’ He goes, ‘I found him. He’s this guy, David Jonsson.’ He mentioned his movies. I had seen some of them. I watched more. He goes, ‘I’m going to meet him.’
He had a secret meeting with him under cloak of darkness in a hotel somewhere, and called me afterwards and said, ‘He’s the guy, he’s the guy, I felt it. I felt it in my soul. He’s a good man, and he is the next Black Panther.’ And I got chills, and I got a little welled-up and said, ‘Let’s do it’. So we’ve been sitting on this secret for a good five or six months.”
Jonsson will play T’Challa’s son in “Black Panther III,” the character expected to be aged up from the pre-teen we saw in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” via events in “Avengers: Secret Wars”.
The hiring has also raised scepticism of some known comic scoopers who’ve been pushing the Damson Idris casting talk for some time.
“Black Panther III” is slated to hit cinemas on December 15th 2028.
