Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” stayed atop the box-office this weekend, following it pulling in a further $26 million Friday and an overall second weekend haul of $84.5 million.
That’s a drop of just 32% from its stellar opening weekend, and the best second weekend take for a Nolan-directed film. Big screens like IMAX, PLFs and 70MM drove 58% of business this weekend, up from 53% last weekend.
29% of all viewing was from IMAX screens, with 4% from IMAX 70MM. The film has already surpassed “Oppenheimer” to become the all-time grossing movie at the historic TCL Chinese Theatre venue with $2.48 million from that cinema alone in sales and pre-sales through to its fifth week.
Analysts indicate the film is tracking to pass $1 billion worldwide in its box office run, specifically landing around $1.1-1.3 billion – which would make it Christopher Nolan’s highest-grossing film ever.
In fact, most films had decent holds this weekend with drops mostly in the 27-45% range. “Moana” came in second with $10.8 million, “Toy Story 5” in third with $10 million, “Minions & Monsters” in fourth with $9.5 million, and the film capture of the Broadway production of “Hadestown” in fifth with $9 million.
The Alan Ritchson-led “Motor City” also debuted with 1.8 million from a 1,600 screen footprint. Nicolas Winding Refn’s “Her Private Hell” also released but didn’t make the top ten – the film headed for a $625,000 opening weekend.
Finally, “Michael” has now surpassed “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” as the year’s top-grossing film. All eyes turn to next weekend with Marvel Studios’ “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” set to destroy opening weekend records for the year and do huge business.
