Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith’s Westbrook Studios and Altar Rock Pictures are teaming up to develop a live-action series adaptation of the “Monster In My Pocket” toy brand.
Both companies are currently meeting with writers to adapt the Morrison Entertainment Group property, which is about a group of over 200 pocket-sized, collectible monsters drawn from global myths and legend.
One of the last major independent toy brands, it was launched in 1989 and has sold over 500 million units globally. It has previously been turned into an ABC animated TV special, comic books and a Nintendo game.
David Boorstein, who runs Scripted TV at Westbrook, says in a statement:
“We’ve seen a real thirst for projects rooted in nostalgia. Monster Is My Pocket had such a major impact on our culture, and we’re excited to dive into the rich, captivating legends of these beloved characters, bringing new life to such an iconic brand alongside our partners at Altar Rock Pictures and MEG.”
Terence Carter, David Boorstein, Barbara Goldner, Josh Feldman, Joe Morrison and Maggie Morrison will executive produce. Westbrook Studios is behind series such as “Cobra Kai,” “Bel-Air,” and “Welcome to Earth”.
