Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige says that the goal of next year’s “Avengers: Secret Wars” will be to essentially simplify the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
It has been no secret that after “Avengers: Endgame” in 2019, the expansion of the MCU both on film and television has met with a divided response and plenty of people have struggled to keep up with where things stand.
With “Avengers: Doomsday” heralding a multiverse crossover bringing together various Marvel universes, many are expecting an ‘Infinity War’ style situation – a cliffhanger heading into ‘Secret Wars’ with the various messy threads of the current screen universes wiped away.
‘Secret Wars’ would then set up a new, single Marvel universe. Earlier this week, Feige stopped short of calling it a reboot, saying only that Jonathan Hickman’s run on the comic in 2015 is a good blueprint for what they intend to do.
Now, a post on Weibo (via Marvel Updates) reporting about recent press Feige did in Shanghai claims that ‘Secret Wars’ essentially marks the beginning of the next stage of the MCU. In the interview, Feige says:
“Secret Wars will represent a beginning. It will establish a streamlined, simplified, single universe that’s easier for audiences to follow. Some aspects will feel familiar. But many, many things will be entirely new. Earlier we talked about attracting younger audiences and connecting with a new generation. That’s exactly what this next universe is intended to do. And at its core…will be the X-Men.”
Feige also claims that Marvel Studios has long-term plans for the MCU planned out all the way through 2042.
“Avengers: Doomsday” opens in cinemas on Decemeber 18th while “Avengers: Secret Wars” arrives on December 17th 2027.
