Deadpool 4 is indeed happening. Star Ryan Reynolds confirmed that there will “eventually” be a fourquel for the Merc with a Mouth during an appearance this past weekend at Fanatics Fest in New York City, also noting that there is “stuff upcoming” for the character.
Reynolds first told the crowd about some lingering Deadpool stories left to tell after taking the stage. “There’s a few really deep cuts that are missing from the movies; I think there’s a few deep cuts missing from some of the comics. There’s certainly some stuff that I love that Fabian [Nicieza] wrote that is incredible. Gerry Duggan is a friend and an incredible comic book writer,” he said, adding, “There’s stuff upcoming; there eventually will be another Deadpool film. It’s going to be great.”
Reynolds’ nod to “stuff upcoming” at Fanatics Fest seems to be the strongest hint yet that Deadpool will appear in another Marvel project before a fourth movie gets going. It’s long been rumored that both Reynolds and Hugh Jackman will reprise their roles as Deadpool and Wolverine in either Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars, and despite this latest hint, it remains a rumor. However, that hasn’t stopped fans from getting excited about the idea.
Wade Wilson’s MCU fate has been less than certain since the release of Deadpool & Wolverine in 2024, with Reynolds telling THR last May that he was mulling more of an X-Men team-up next for his Marvel antihero. “His ultimate dream is to be accepted and appreciated,” he explained. “But he can’t be accepted. His coping mechanism of deflecting shame through humor works only when used to pave over his many inadequacies. If and when he does become an Avenger or X-Man, we’re at the end of his journey.”
It’s not surprising to hear that Reynolds will eventually suit up again as Deadpool, though. All three of the character’s movies have been huge box office successes, with the third one making $1.3 billion globally at a time when “superhero fatigue” was supposedly in full swing.
We’ll likely find out exactly how and when Deadpool will return before the end of 2027. In the meantime, Reynolds is set to star in a remake of Thunderbolt and Lightfoot and a Netflix adaptation of Kay Thompson and Hilary Knight’s Eloise book series, in which he’ll play the villain.
