While his “The Beauty” looks like it won’t be back, prolific TV series creator Ryan Murphy and FX are teaming up yet again for another sexy new drama.
This time it’s “The Shards,” an adaptation of the recent novel by “American Psycho” and “Rules of Attraction” author Bret Easton Ellis.
The story is set in early 1980s Los Angeles and follows seventeen-year-old Bret (Igby Rigney) – a nihilistic, 17-year-old, bisexual San Fernando Valley trust-fund senior at the exclusive Buckley prep school in 1981.
It’s there that a new student arrives with a mysterious past. Robert Mallory (Homer Gere) is bright, handsome, charismatic, and shielding a secret from Bret and his friends even as he becomes a part of their tightly knit circle.
Bret’s obsession is equalled only by his increasingly unsettling preoccupation with the Trawler, a serial killer targeting teenagers who is on the loose and who seems to be drawing ever closer.
Also in the social circle are Susan Reynolds (Kaia Gerber), Debbie Schaffer (Hayes Warner), and Thom Wright (Graham Campbell). Co-starring are Wes Bentley as Terry Schaffer, Evan Rachel Wood as Liz Schaffer, and Jordan Roth as Steven Reinhardt.
Murphy, Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, Ellis, Eric Kovtun, Scott Robertson, Nissa Diederich, Tanase Popa, Nick Hall, Michael Uppendahl, Max Winkler, Kathleen McCaffrey, and Brian Young serve as executive producers.
“The Shards” premieres with two episodes Wednesday, August 5th on Hulu & FX
