Netflix has reportedly cancelled its all-star sci-fi series “The Boroughs” after just one season.

Executive produced by “Stranger Things” creators The Duffer Brothers and created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, the series debuted last month to strong reviews.

Unfortunately, viewership for the title has been soft and Netflix opted not to proceed. The show debuted to a small 5.6 million views in its opening weekend, jumping to 9.5 million in its first full week, but then plummeting to 3.7 million views the following week.

Prior to the numbers coming in, Netflix had been talking about renewing the series, and a Season 2 writers’ room had been opened.

Even the idea of shooting the second and third seasons back-to-back was reportedly floated at one point. The series also involves considerable special effects which, combined with its cast, made for a high price tag.

Alfred Molina, Geena Davis, Alfre Woodard, Denis O’Hare, Clarke Peters, Jena Malone, Carlos Miranda and Bill Pullman starred in the series.
