Chris Sanders, who co-wrote and co-directed the original 2002 animated “Lilo & Stitch” film, will reportedly write and direct the sequel to last year’s live-action remake.
That remake made over $1 billion dollars at the global box office, becoming one of 2025’s biggest hits. Sanders voiced the character of Stitch in both the original animated and the live-action film.
Disney has quickly greenlit a follow-up, and the sequel is already slated to begin shooting later this year. Jonathan Eirich will produce.
The remake followed the same story as the original about a lonely girl who befriends a blue puppy, one that turns out to be an escaped alien engineered to be a weapon of mass destruction.
The sequel, however, will be a brand-new story and isn’t expected to be related to the two direct-to-video animated sequels “Stitch! The Movie” and “Stitch Has a Glitch”.
Sanders replaces Dean Fleischer Camp, who directed the remake, and Chris Kekaniokalani Bright and Mike Van Waes who penned it.
