“Scary Movie” won the domestic box-office this weekend with numbers now indicating a franchise-best debut of $55 million for the three days.
It’s the best domestic start for a Paramount comedy ever, and the best box-office launch of a straight-up comedy since 2014’s “22 Jump Street”.
Internationally, it had a smashing debut with an additional $50.5 million, bringing its worldwide debut weekend to $105.5 million. That’s a bigger start than the $97 million of “Scream 7” earlier this year.
But that’s just the start of an interesting session. Amazon MGM Studios’ “Masters of the Universe” got off to a fizzer of a kick-off with just $29.3 million domestically and a further $25 million overseas.
That global $54.3 million debut is pretty terrible for a film with a $170 million production budget, with exit polls indicating teenagers and kids just didn’t have any interest in the film. It was men over 45 who turned out it.
The third through fifth place titles were all dominated by YouTubers turned filmmakers. “Backrooms” and “Obsession” are duking it out for third and fourth with both at just over $25 million for the weekend. “Backrooms” looks to be falling 68% in its second weekend, while “Obsession” is only dropping 7% in its fourth.
Fathom Events’ “Amazing Digital Circus” debuts in fifth with $12.7 million. “Michael” has now hit the $898 million total mark worldwide, becoming Lionsgate’s highest-grossing film to date.
Universal and Nintendo’s “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” has now hit the $1 billion worldwide mark at the box-office – the first studio film to do so this year.
