IMAX tickets for Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” went online this morning, and demand has been so high that it has caused issues across ticketing sites as well as spawned a reseller market.
Pre-sales went slightly off course this morning, with wait times lasting for over an hour and crashes in some cases, according to Forbes. AMC, Fandango, and Regal were all impacted initially, but seem to be working again.
This evening has also seen ‘movie profiteers’, aka scalpers, striking and striking hard. They have now flooded eBay and other resellers with tickets for some screenings going for several hundred dollars – in one case, up to $1,500 U.S. dollars for one IMAX 70mm showing.
The film was shot entirely with IMAX cameras, making it one of the most ambitious projects of his career and is also being pushed as the best way to see the film. More regular non-IMAX tickets for the movie don’t go on sale until later, which has created a frenzy for the IMAX tickets for a movie that doesn’t open for another six weeks. The huge presales have also been seen as an effective rebuff of various attempts on X and other online spheres to incite faux outrage over Nolan’s film.
Meanwhile, the official site for the film has been updated to include the movie’s trailer made available in all the different aspect ratios the film will be available in. You can watch the trailer and adjust it on the fly to show which parts of the frame will be presented – from the IMAX 70mm 1.43:1 and regular 1.9:1 IMAX, to the 1.85 of Dolby Cinema, 2.2:1 of 70mm and 2.39:1 of 35mm.
“The Odyssey” is set to open in cinemas on July 17th.
