Not 30 seconds ago, I was writing about a movie that has an internet-driven negative buzz around it. Now I find myself writing about another one. Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. That casting furore simply won’t die down online. How far does it bleed through into Normo world? Does anyone really care about that stuff out there, I wonder?
Either way, Universal Pictures is pushing hard on the promo work. There has been a GQ feature article on the movie. Now a new featurette has dropped:
The Odyssey, as any good Outposter already knows, is one of two major epics of ancient Greek literature attributed to Homer and is one of the oldest surviving works of literature in the whole world. It tells the story of Odysseus, King of Ithaca, and his perilous journey home after the Trojan War. Scholars point to its themes of heroism, loyalty, cunning, love, and the struggle against divine will.
These manifest through challenges presented via encounters with the Cyclops, the Sirens, and the witch-goddess Circe. As the approach nears, Universal have released a rather funky new poster for the movie that showcases Odysseus facing down the Laestrygonians. In the original poem, these island-dwelling giants destroy eleven of Odysseus’s ships by hurling massive boulders from the cliffs.
Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron, Benny Safdie, Elliot Page, John Leguizamo, Himesh Patel, Bill Irwin, Jon Bernthal, Mia Goth and Corey Hawkins all star. As the release approaches,
The Odyssey will be released in cinemas on July 17th 2026.
