Doctor Who remains a harsh use case for the perils of letting your own, personal views shape your creative agenda. As the world was turning away from hyper-progessivism, and the Overton Window was only moving in one direction, those behind the show simply couldn’t help themselves.
Now, as a result, the most watched and most successful sci-fi programme in the world, and a hugely important financial export for the BBC, is on life support, and the much-vaunted deal with Disney is a smoking wreck.
And the hits just keep on coming for Doctor Who, as now it seems that the Christmas Special is also in doubt for one fairly big reason – they can’t find anyone to take on the role. Now, health warning, this story comes from The Sun, a tabloid of… ahem… mixed accuracy.
Take a moment to think about this possibility, though. A role once seen as a gift. One of the highest profile roles on British television, and a gateway to all sorts of other offers if handled correctly, suddenly can’t be filled?
The paper quotes an “insider”, as they always do:
“The problem is that they have found it difficult to find anyone who’ll take on the part of the 16th Time Lord, partly because it now feels like a role that comes with all the baggage of the most recent series. There are fears that even if they do manage to pull something together, it is going to be a poor cousin to previous Christmas specials, which have always been adored by fans.”
Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor regenerated into Billie Piper in a surprise twist at the end of the last season. Therefore, the Christmas special would see Piper in the role before the new Doctor is revealed at the end.
Whatever the truth behind the rumors, it is a sad state of affairs for such a show to find itself in.
