The finale of “The Boys” was released yesterday, and with it has come debate and also questions that showrunner Eric Kripke is finally answering.

SPOILERS AHEAD FOR “THE BOYS” FINALE

After 40 episodes over seven years, the series came to an end with multiple deaths of major characters, including four major ones – Homelander, The Deep, O Father and Billy Butcher.

Speaking with Gold Derby, he says he wants audiences to walk away from this show hopeful:

“I find this show hopeful, and hope is possible. But it’s really hard, and it requires great sacrifice, and it requires astounding amounts of failure before you can get to success. That’s how the world works, in my view, and they went through a lot to get to that point.”

He says he’s most proud of the final Butcher-Hughie scene, dubbing it “intimate” and one that was always going to be the way that relationship ended right from the beginning.

He was asked if Queen Maeve’s return was ever considered; he revealed it was, but the actress has mostly retired from acting:

“I would have loved to have had Maeve. I was in conversation with Dom. We still email once in a while. She’s mostly retired from acting, and her schedule didn’t work out. It was all a very friendly, non-controversial thing. I was like, “‘f we wrote it, would you do it?’ And she’s like, ‘I’m kind of out of it, and I’m busy, and unfortunately I can’t, but send everyone my love.’ That was sort of it.”

The comments come as the reaction to the finale hasn’t been great – specifically, there’s a lot of rage about the lack of use of “Gen V” characters like Marie, while others had issues with some of the creative choices such as the nature of Homelander’s death.

On the IMDb, the show’s final episode has clocked in at a 6.7/10 – the second lowest of the entire series behind only last week’s penultimate one. The full episode is now up on Amazon Prime Video.
