It looks like unashamedly “Man TV” is back. Studios seem to have finally worked it out that, when it comes to the world of multiple streaming subs, binge-watching, and making watch-lists of must-see TV shows, it really is men that make up the bulk of this uber-audience. Big hits recently have started to skew male-centric again. Just today, we reported that the second season of The Terminal List has a release date, and now comes the news that Reacher has been renewed again, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
It’s not really a surprise, but scheduling is becoming challenging with star Alan Ritchson seemingly everywhere right now. The role is also physically demanding, and nobody is getting any younger, so a long break between seasons presents an ongoing problem.
The fifth season renewal is ahead of the fourth season, which has already wrapped and is awaiting confirmation of a release date, likely to be sometime in the late autumn, based on previous series releases.
It is based on Gone Tomorrow, the thirteenth novel. In the book, Reacher witnesses a tragic event on the New York subway at 2 Am that makes no sense, and when one of those involved is revealed to be a staffer at the Pentagon, he finds himself drawn to understand what happened and why, despite being repeatedly and emphatically warned off the case. He will, of course, solve the mystery through a combination of investigative skills and punching people really, really hard.
Reacher, based on the novels by Lee Child, is a massive hit for Amazon Prime. Nick Santora remains as showrunner, but no word yet on which novel they will adapt for the fifth series.
