Masters Of The Universe had great reviews coming out of early screenings and got a strong reception when shown to exhibitors. It is also cautiously looked forward to by a lot of Outposters. This doesn’t seem to be tracking through into box office projections.
The early figures for the Amazon MGM Studios’ blockbuster adaptation of the 1980s cartoon and toy line, frankly, don’t look too good.
A report into the numbers from Box-Office Theory points to a domestic opening weekend of around $25 million.
For context, the movie is in a $150 million plus budget bracket.
The report talks to brand awareness, but not as high “cultural presence” as something like Transformers. They bracket it as closer to Tron, and we all know how they fared, financially.
The report says that the buzz is among adult men of a certain age (I think they are talking about us!) who played with the toys and watched the cartoons. There is not a breakthrough beyond that yet.
Amazon has not yet started focussed marketing efforts, review screenings start soon, and positive word of mouth could also propel this forward.
The big question is, what will it look like overseas? Did Masters Of The Universe land with 80s kids much beyond the English-speaking West?
Also, today’s box office landscape has to be taken into account, where entry into he $1 billion club seems harder than ever, and $600 million hauls are seen as a great success.
This one will be interesting to watch unfold.
