Steven Spielberg’s new film “Disclosure Day” arrives in cinemas in about six weeks and sees the master filmmaker return to the sci-fi genre, exploring a tale in which humanity at large learns the truth about extraterrestrial life.

With its UFO subject matter, inevitable comparisons have been drawn to one of Spielberg’s most famous works, the 1977 classic “Close Encounters of the Third Kind”.

In a recent Associated Press interview with the film’s leading man, Josh O’Connor, seems to indicate this is something of a ‘spiritual sequel’ that expands on ideas from that film.

The reporter says in the article, “It has been suggested by Emily Blunt, and confirmed by O’Connor, that it answers some questions raised by ‘Close Encounters of the Third Kind’.” However, a direct quote from the actor saying that isn’t included in the interview piece.

As World of Reel points out, there has been online speculation that the film could be more than just a ‘spiritual’ sequel – in fact, it could well be a direct one.

Spielberg confirmed at CinemaCon that he’s keeping the entire third act of the film under wraps; all footage and photos from the movie have been deliberately vague enough to hide its big revelations.

We’ll find out either way when “Disclosure Day” opens in cinemas on June 12th.
