I love the first Thor movie. It really shouldn’t work. The whole thing is just so silly that to even attempt it feels almost foolish. Then the movie looks you squarely in the eye and says: Look. You know this is ridiculous. I know this is ridiculous. It’s about a pan-dimensional space Norwegian who flies with a magic hammer and gets around on a big rainbow bridge. Just go with me on this, and we’ll have a good time!

So you do go with it, and you do have a good time.

The man mostly responsible for all this is renowned Shakespearean actor and filmmaker Kenneth Branagh, who decided it needed to play out like a Shakespearean tragedy, crossed with an opera, then wrapped in superhero clothes. It takes itself 100% seriously, while making you feel like you are in on the joke. Take note, Taika Waititi.

This is why Thor just works.

Having directed the first Thor way back at the start of the MCU, in 2011, Kenneth Branagh has said he would like to return to the franchise he helped start.

In an interview with Business Insider, Branagh revealed that he turned down the sequel:

“I definitely was ready for another, for sure, but not right then. Marvel shoots are intense. Marvel post-production is more intense – wildly exciting but super intense. I definitely needed to smell the roses. Kevin Feige was very understanding, and so was the cast. I needed a break.

I was thrilled to be asked. They were disappointed; they understood, but they were disappointed. They wanted to go straight away with a sequel, and why shouldn’t they? And I said to Kevin at that time, ‘I don’t have it in me.’”

Now, as the MCU approaches its 20th birthday, Branagh says he’s quite ready to return to the MCU and gave a hint as to what he would like to do:

“Part of me would love to finish my relationship with that character. I’d always wanted to do more and indeed had a couple of ideas, more in the territory of James Mangold’s brilliant Logan. I would love to see Chris Hemsworth and the others have their own individual final story that takes Thor into a glorious twilight.”

A fifth Thor film has been rumoured, but nothing is set. Thor returns in Avengers: Doomsday later this year.
