In 2023, “Paddington” filmmaker Paul King delivered the musical fantasy film “Wonka,” a Timothee Chalamet-led prequel to Roald Dahl’s book “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and its assorted film adaptations.

The movie, following Willy Wonka’s early days as a chocolatier while contending with his future rivals, proved a major success and grossed $634.5 million off a $125 million budget. It ultimately was the eighth-highest-grossing film of 2023.

On top of that, it got generally positive reviews. So it came as little surprise that a follow-up was given the green light shortly after. At last report back in late 2024, King confirmed that the script was being written at the time with the film’s story already in place.

Nothing further has really come out since then, bar Warner Bros. Pictures setting aside a December 17th 2027 release date for an “untitled family film release” which industry insiders suspect will be for this sequel.

That’s looking more and more likely with DanielRPK reporting today that production on “Wonka 2” is slated to kick off in August. That would likely make it Chalamet’s next film, with the actor having wrapped “Dune: Part Three” back in November.

Warners could well make an announcement about the film at CinemaCon this week, but it’s wait-and-see for now. Chalamet remains linked to the James Mangold-directed MotoGP film “High Side,” but no production dates for that have yet been revealed.
