Ryan Coogler is set to executive produce an “Animorphs” TV series currently in early development on the Disney+ service.

The story follows a group of teenagers who uncover a hidden threat lurking beneath their everyday lives, all while juggling relationships, curfews, and the chaos of High School.

Bayan Wolcott (“The Testaments,” “Class of ’09”) is attached to write the adaptation and will also executive produce alongside Sev Ohanian, Zinzi Coogler, Iole Lucchese and Caitlin Friedman.

Katherine Applegate and her husband, Michael Grant, created the book series that follows a group of teenagers who discover that the Earth is being secretly taken over by a parasitic aliens called Yeerks.

They meet a dying alien of the Andalite race, a being who has been fighting the Yeerks and their expansion across the galaxy. They give the teens the ability to morph into any animal they touch by absorbing the animal’s DNA.

They use this power to launch a secret resistance against the Yeerks and to save the world. They are later joined by a young Andalite stranded on Earth. 54 books in the series were published between 1996-2001 and have sold more than 35 million copies worldwide.

A live-action series aired on Nickelodeon for two seasons between 1998 and 2000 and starred the likes of Shawn Ashmore and Brooke Nevin.
