If anyone out there is a parent to a daughter of a certain age, it is a near impossibility that you aren’t familiar with Moana. The 2016 Disney animated juggernaut seared itself into the consciousness of girls everywhere, and their parents were just collateral damage.
Here’s the thing. Whisper it quietly. It’s actually really good. It was Disney on top form with great characters, memorable songs, and top-quality animation. And who the hell knew that Dwayne Johnson could actually sing?
Eventually, the scourge of the Disney live-action remake was going to come for it. Will it be more Cinderella and less The Little Mermaid?
Well, now you can see for yourself, a trailer has landed:
The response is mixed, with praise for the songs and the familiarity with the original, but criticism for the artificial, studio-bound feel of a lot of the shots, along with fun being poked at The Rock’s hair and bodysuit. Even Weird Al Yankovic commented, saying online:
“We’ve told all the casting agents that the Weird Al biopic sequel is currently on hold, but they just keep sending in headshots.”
17-year-old Australian actress Catherine Laga’aia (The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart) plays Moana alongside Johnson, reprising his role as the demigod Maui
Joining them are Frankie Adams (The Expanse) as Moana’s mother, Sina; John Tui (Battleship) as Moana’s father, Chief Tui; and New Zealand’s Rena Owen (Once Were Warriors) as Gramma Tala.
Thomas Kail directs from a script by Jared Bush and Dana Ledoux Miller. Johnson, Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia, and Beau Flynn all produced the film.
Disney has also released a featurette on The Artistry of Moana.
The live-action Moana movie is set to release in theaters on July 10th, 2026.
