Production has officially gotten underway on Mike Flanagan’s new take on “The Exorcist” for Universal Pictures.
Flanagan posted a photo from the set of the film which is currently in production and will star Scarlett Johansson – the “Jurassic World: Rebirth” and former Marvel star who was just announced by Forbes as the highest earning actress of 2025.
Also onboard are Jacobi Jupe, Chiwetel Ejiofor, John Leguizamo, Sasha Calle, Laurence Fishburne, and Diane Lane who have the lead roles in the project which is set in the same ‘universe’ as “The Exorcist” films but won’t be a sequel or remake.
Plot and character specifics regarding the film are under wraps short of Johansson playing a mother and Jupe is her son. The film will also have no link to the 2023 bomb “The Exorcist: Believer”.
Frequent Flanagan collaborators like Rahul Kohli, Carla Gugino, Hamish Linklater, Carl Lumbly, Samantha Sloyan, Kate Siegel, John Gallagher Jr., Robert Longstreet, Gil Bellows, Matt Biedel and Benjamin Pajak are also involved.
Flanagan wrote the script and is directing and producing the film, which is set up at Blumhouse-Atomic Monster and Morgan Creek Entertainment. Universal Pictures will release it theatrically on March 12th 2027.
