So a couple of things I wanted to talk about before I go into this unboxing. I know I’ve been less than prolific as of late with my posts and that’s mostly due to my health. In short, on January 9th I had a pretty damn good heart attack. Felt like I slept on my arm wrong, so I decided go upstairs to get some advil and only made it halfway when I sank to my knees. Went to the hospital ER where the confirmed it.
Long story short, I had a 95% blockage in my LAD, which they helpfully nicknamed “the Widowmaker.” Wonderful. Well I got a stent and have been recovering the last 2 months. Overall I’m doing well. But I know a ton of this audience is of a certain age or getting close. If I had to give any advice is take a stress test here and there. You don’t want none of this kind of pain.
But enough of that, sometimes things get better. In September of 2024, I was able to get in on Tomy’s limited sale of the refit Enterprise from Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Tomy does a lot of these models, and not just for Star Trek. This is one I had to have.
So I plunked down my $700 (well burned a little more off a credit card anyway) and waited. Originally they promised it would be shipped by Sept 2025 but here we are 6 months later and it’s just arrived.
Tomy, from what I can tell from past reviews of other models, does a lot of work to make something special. For one, this thing is 1:350 scale of the Enterprise and is 80% die cast metal. This means I got a very large, very heavy box.
No those are dust flecks, those are stars. I opened it up and found a huge Styrofoam box holding the ship.
The instructions are right there before you even get the lid off. Helpful. Removing the lid I see the base, the Enterprise herself, and some removable foam dividers that have other pieces. It also came with certificates of authenticity.
I took it out of the box and found the supports and such. I put the whole thing together. Let me tell you, this thing is heavy. It’s at least 20 pounds. Eagerly I set it up and plug it in to a wall wart and USB-C cable to see it in its glory.
And… nothing. No lights. No nothing. I read the instructions, follow it again. Get more frustrated. Finally give up and send an email.
I ended up calling the next day. He tells me to ignore the instructions and instead give the button a tap or double tap instead of holding for 3 seconds. Get home from work and eagerly try. Still nothing. Now I’m panicking.
I re-read the instructions and it seems that the power needs to be 5v 2amps usb C. Good luck. So I search around and find an adapter that’s USB-A and plug in an A to C cable.
Holding my breath, I do the tap and… glorious!
I begin playing around with the various tap-combos to get it into Warp.
In the close up, you can really see the iridescent paint job they did. It really misses no detail.
The shuttle bay door is removable and they put some effort into the hangar deck.
This thing is awesome. The deflector dish glows blue in Warp mode but goes to orange-white when its not.
Here’s one more of the arboretum.
It came with a nice little Vulcan shuttle on a detachable warp sled even. I cannot be happier to have this model. It really is the best looking Trek ship bar none. I know it’s on a kitchen counter at the moment but I’m working to move to Florida at the end of the year and it will get a much better place for display. Tomy really went all out and this model is probably as close to movie accurate as you can get. If there’s some obsession of yours that you’ve always wanted a model of, keep an eye on their site. I understand they are doing a pretty good Knight Rider KITT car at the moment.
More movie reviews are coming soon! I’m working on them. In the meantime, take a trip down my previous reviews with Trek On!
