Initially rumoured yesterday, Kate Winslet is reportedly set to join Andy Serkis’ Middle-earth epic “The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum”, reports Deadline.

The trade’s sources claim the part is the female lead, but specifics of the role have not been disclosed. Serkis and producer Peter Jackson reportedly spent a good chunk of last year wooing Winslet for the role.

The job will require Winslet to move to New Zealand for at least four months as shooting runs from late May to October. Winslet and Jackson previously shot her breakout 1994 film “Heavenly Creatures” there.

Winslet will join a cast that includes the return of Elijah Wood as Frodo Baggins, Ian McKellen as Gandalf and Serkis as Gollum. Leo Woodall is rumored to be taking over the role of Aragorn.

Set between “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring,” the new film follows a young Aragorn’s perilous quest to capture Gollum before the creature can reveal the Ring’s location to Sauron.

Serkis has recently been in Los Angeles and New Zealand in pre-production for the film scripted by Philippa Boyens, Fran Walsh, Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou. Jackson, Boyens, Walsh and Zane Weiner are producing.
