A planned live-action adaptation of Disney’s beloved 1973 animated take on “Robin Hood” is dead.
Participating in a Reddit AMA, filmmaker Carlos López Estrada said the studio wasn’t moving forward with a planned photorealistic graphical take on the work (ala “The Lion King”).
The original film used animated anthropomorphic animals with Robin Hood and Maid Marian as red foxes, Little John as a brown bear, Prince John as a lion and more.
The project was first announced very early into the pandemic, back in April 2020, with Estrada in early development on the film for the Disney+ streaming service.
Asked about the project’s status during the session, the “Blindspotting” and “Raya and the Last Dragon” co-director said: “It’s dead, sadly. I say ‘sadly’ because I actually thought there was something really special (and original!) there. Some truly extraordinary music we had figured out for it.”
Kari Granlund was writing the script for the film that would’ve blended live action and CG. Recently, Disney has prioritised live-action remakes of more recent animated features – shying away from their pre-1989 catalogue after the failure of “Snow White”.
At the same time, they’ve also pulled back on direct-to-streaming releases in favour of theatrical releases.
