Actor Robert Carradine, best known for his roles in the “Revenge of the Nerds” film and “Lizzie McGuire” TV franchises, has died at the age of 71.

The actor, younger brother of Keith Carradine and the late David Carradine, had reportedly struggled for nearly two decades with bipolar disorder and took his own life.

In a statement, the family asked for “privacy to grieve this unfathomable loss”. Keith Carradine also issued a statement saying:

“We want people to know it [he had bipolar], and there is no shame in it. It is an illness that got the best of him, and I want to celebrate him for his struggle with it, and celebrate his beautiful soul. He was profoundly gifted, and we will miss him every day. We will take solace in how funny he could be, how wise and utterly accepting and tolerant he was. That’s who my baby brother was.”

Robert made his big-screen debut in 1972 alongside John Wayne in “The Cowboys” before taking roles in celebrated films like Martin Scorsese’s “Mean Streets,” Hal Ashby’s “Coming Home” and Walter Hill’s “The Long Riders”.

His biggest success came with 1984 comedy “Revenge of the Nerds” in his iconic role of head nerd Lewis Skolnick. Years later, he found a new generation of fans playing Lizzie McGuire’s father.

He also raced at the Grand Prix level, formed a band with Mare Winningham called The Waybacks, and was a single dad for years. Robert Carradine is survived by his children, grandchildren, brothers, nieces and nephews.
