Paramount+ is reportedly set to complete filming on the second season of “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy” tomorrow. The announcement comes as the first season is still in the midst of airing, to what has been a divisive response.
Prior to airing, scepticism was sky high surrounding the show, with a lot of the fanbase not happy with the whole idea of the show. Then, critical early reviews proved surprisingly pretty good.
Then the show began airing, and several episodes in there have been reactions all over the shop – some pleasantly surprised by it, some dismissing it, some actively hating on it for reasons both expected (“Kurtzman sucks,” “Wokeness in ‘Star Trek’, OMG!”) and unexpected, like the way Holly Hunter’s Captain Ake slouches in her chair at times.
One of the best-received elements is Paul Giamatti’s Nus Braka character. The half Klingon/half Tellarite space pirate made a small appearance in the premiere, but then got to really feast with the show’s sixth episode, with lengthy scenery-chewing monologues and a scheme proving more calculating than expected.
Giamatti is expected to return in further episodes this season. He recently appeared on The D-Con Chamber podcast with hosts Dominic Keating and Connor Trinneer, and confirmed his character survives the first season – but isn’t returning for the second. However he’s quite open to returning for a third:
“He’s still alive. So, you know, something could be done with him. I just enjoyed doing it with everybody. I liked being on set. It was pleasant. We all probably know that’s not always the case.”
He also says the character’s ‘tic-tac-toe hair’ will be explained in an upcoming episode. “Starfleet Academy” wraps its first season run on March 12th.
