Sony has now confirmed a report at Bloomberg stating that the Sony-owned studio Bluepoint Games is being shut down next month – with roughly 70 people being put out of work.
Founded in 2006, Bluepoint Games rose to fame as ‘masters of remastering’, the company drawing acclaim for the “God of War Collection” in 2009 and both “The Ico & Shadow of the Colossus Collection” and “Metal Gear Solid HD Collection” in 2011 – updating those original PS2 games in to HD for PS3.
In 2015 they did the acclaimed “Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection”, bringing the original PS3 trilogy to PS4 along with “Gravity Rush Remastered” and later a PS4 version of “Shadow of the Colossus”.
In 2020, they did a remake of PS3-era “Demon’s Souls” for the PS5 as one of the console’s launch titles, drawing much acclaim. Sony acquired the studio in 2021.
In recent years, Bluepoint was working on a live service “God of War” game, but a while back, Sony pulled the plug on it, “The Last of Us” multiplayer and at least six other live service titles – effectively walking away from their live service strategy.
A lot of eyes are on “Marathon” at this point, and what will happen over at Bungie if that live-service game fails to catch on in a very big way.
