In 2022, news came that a new take on the character of no-nonsense San Francisco cop Frank Bullitt was in the works, and filmmaker Steven Spielberg was slated to direct.
Not only that, but Bradley Cooper had reportedly closed a deal to star in the film, which would NOT be a remake of the iconic Steven McQueen-led 1968 thriller “Bullitt,” but rather a new original story featuring the character.
Josh Singer was attached to write the script while Cooper, Spielberg and Kristie Macosko Krieger would produce. In late 2023, Krieger gave an update saying the hope was for a script to be delivered soon.
Just over two years on from that, World of Reel reports that rumors emerged a few weeks ago suggesting either Spielberg or Cooper would drop out of the project, with only one of them remaining.
They add that they’ve got in touch with sources about the status of the project and “can now say with confidence that the project is firmly on the back burner”.
Cooper is reportedly at work on another “Maestro”-style “passion project” which he plans to direct later this year or in early 2027.
Spielberg is in post-production on “Disclosure Day,” and their source reports that while he hasn’t decided on a follow-up, the new “Bullitt” won’t be it.
