While much of the talk about Kathleen Kennedy’s exit from Lucasfilm has been about the future of “Star Wars,” that is not the only franchise that the company controls.
Its other most notable film series is “Indiana Jones,” which came back relatively recently with 2023’s “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny”. Both it and its predecessor, 2008’s “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,” received a bit of a mixed reception.
Crucially, ‘Dial’ made only $383 million worldwide – about half of what ‘Crystal Skull’ pulled in – despite a considerably more expensive budget at $294 million. Combined with Harrison Ford’s advancing age (he’s currently 83), it seemed the franchise is effectively dead for now.
Or is it? Speaking with Deadline as part of her exit interview, Kennedy confirmed Ford was the driving force behind the fifth film, but even then – she doesn’t think the character is done:
“He did not want Indy to end with the fourth movie. He wanted a chance at another, and we did that for him. I don’t think Indy will ever be done, but I don’t think anybody is interested right now in exploring it. These are timeless movies, and Indy will never be done.”
Asked whether another film could happen, Kennedy responded:
“You never know. But we are all still here, Steven and Frank and I, and Harrison and George. So we get to say whether there’s going to be any more, or not.”
So, if one does go ahead, it would have to have the blessing of Spielberg, Ford, Kennedy, Lucas and producer Frank Marshall in order to happen. So far, there’s been no rumors whatsoever of any further Indiana Jones projects.
The comments come as it was recently revealed that an Indiana Jones animated series was in development under the code name ‘Reggie’ at one point before being cancelled, reports The Wrap. Rodrigo Blass (“Star Wars: Visions”) spearheaded that take, and it was reportedly set between some of the earlier films.
