“Paddington 2” and “Wonka” director Paul King has reportedly been set to direct the film adaptation of the Labubu toy franchise at Sony Pictures.

It is not yet determined if the film will be either live-action or animated, either way the plan is to launch a potential film franchise involving these scruffy monster.

Designed by artist Kasing Lung and initially made by How2 Work, Labubu took off when Chinese retailer Pop Mart began selling them in 2019.

Sold via ‘blind boxes’, so buyers never know what actual character they are acquiring until they open the package, it has caused a huge surge in demand, along with a secondary market where people pay huge prices for the rarest ones.

Department M and Wenxin She will produce the film which is still in early development and is seeking a writer. Sony is working with Pop Mart on the adaptation.

Sony Pictures is coming off the massive success of its animated feature “KPop Demon Hunters” which was released via Netflix.
