The world’s largest exhibition trade association, Cinema United, revealed its annual report about the state of theatrical exhibition today.

The report goes into details about attendance beyond the box-office numbers with one of the big finds being that attendance of Gen Z moviegoers, those currently in their early teens to late twenties, grew by 25% in the past twelve months – the highest increase of any age group.

Gen Z audiences averaged 6.1 visits a year, up from 4.9 last year, and 41% of Gen Z audiences went to movies at least six times or more.

As for what’s important to them, more immersive moviegoing (ie. bigger screens/sound) and unique concessions (better food) were the priorities.

In terms of more general stats – 77% of Americans saw at least one film in the cinema this year, the number of those who saw more than six was up by 8%, and cinema loyalty programs were up by 15%.

Also, cinema owners spent over $1.5 billion upgrading their theatres over the past year in North America alone.
