MGM+ has handed out the green light for an eight-episode drama series based on the iconic Western film “The Magnificent Seven”.
“Heroes” creator Tim Kring will executive produce the series alongside Donald De Line (“Billy the Kid”), Lawrence Mirisch and Bruce Kaufman.
“True Detective” creator Nic Pizzolatto was developing a series adaptation of the property at Amazon, but that is no longer happening, and Pizzolatto is not involved in the new adaptation at MGM+.
The story follows a group of Old West mercenaries who are hired to protect a peaceful Quaker village after it is massacred by a land baron’s hired guns. As the flawed but gifted mercenaries embed with the Quakers, they must grapple with the question of whether it is acceptable to use violence to defend a people whose faith is based on nonviolence.
A U.S. reimagining of Akira Kurosawa’s “Seven Samurai,” the John Sturges-directed 1960 original is largely considered one of the greatest Western films of all time.
Filming is slated to begin in June 2026. Pizzolatto also penned the 2016 remake, starring Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt.
