If you are an Outposter of a certain age, then you well remember Orca: The Killer Whale. A truly preposterous romp that featured a mournful Richard Harris facing off against a vengeful Shamu.

It scarred a generation of kids with scenes of aborted whale foetuses being hosed of decks, Bo Derek’s leg, and whales demonstrating surprisingly good understanding of marine fuel depot engineering.

Since then, killer whales in movies have been much more cuddly, and stayed that way no matter how many trainers the grumpy imprisoned bastards dragged to a drowning death while the theme park they lived in tried to hush it up.

Still, it was clearly only a matter of time before these animals were revisited as a potential watery nemesis, and it only needed somebody to ask one question:

“What if we mixed Free Willy in with The Shallows?”

Excellent question, and here is the answer – Killer Whale.

The story follows best friends Maddie and Trish as they find themselves trapped in a remote lagoon with the dangerous killer whale named Ceto.

Their peaceful retreat soon becomes a terrifying fight to stay alive when the ocean’s most bloodthirsty predator seeks vengeance for a brutal life in captivity.

Prepare to cheer for the whale, I reckon!

Killer Whale is directed by writer / producer / filmmaker Jo-Anne Brechin, and the screenplay is written by Katharine E. McPhee, Jo-Anne Brechin.

We know exactly what it will be like, but in the finest traditions of everything from Deep Blue Sea to Killer Fish, we are powerless to resist.

Killer Whale will be out in some theaters and on VOD on January 16th.
