With “Sinners” and “One Battle After Another” re-releasing in IMAX cinemas yesterday, it didn’t take long for almost all of the six-minute prologue for Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” to unofficially appear online.

Poor quality bootlegs of the clip are now circulating, while those in attendance have confirmed earlier reports that the sequence is essentially the opening parts of “The Odyssey” story. We see the Trojan Horse being pulled into Troy, and Odysseus and his men sneaking out and slaughtering guards before opening the gates.

Ludwig Goransson’s score is pervasive throughout the clip, ratcheting up the tension of the sequence. A brief shot of the Cyclops Polyphemus, a practical creation, is also seen.

Nolan revealed recently to Empire that he’s adopting an approach more akin to “Troy” than “Clash of the Titans,” essentially grounding the fantastical elements of Greek myth in reality:

“One of the things I needed to crack was how to approach mythological elements in a sort of real-world way. The big breakthrough creatively in thinking about the gods was that everything that is now explained by science was once supernatural.

Lightning, thunder, earthquakes, volcanoes… people are literally seeing gods everywhere; not even the evidence of gods, they’re seeing the actions of gods. I don’t want to say too much about it beyond indicating that yes, the evidence of the supernatural is all around these people. It’s very much part of their lives. And I think it’s quite a lot of fun to tap into that.”

What that will mean for characters like Circe and Calypso, monsters like the Sirens and Scylla, and the Gods who are key to the story like Poseidon, Athena, Zeus, Helios, and Hermes, is unclear.

Homer’s ancient Greek poem follows Odysseus and his crew on their journey home following the Trojan War, encountering all manner of threats along the way. The film was shot entirely with brand-new IMAX film technology and opens everywhere on July 17th 2026.
