If Frederick Forsyth was the King of espionage thrillers, then John le Carré was the Crown Prince. From The Spy Who Came In From The Cold, through The Night Manager, to The Tailor Of Panama, his stories have gripped readers for decades.
Le Carre
An eight-episode adaptation of his novel A Legacy Of Spies is in development, with Matthew Macfadyen set to play legendary spymaster George Smiley. This is the fourth version of the character, following Rupert Davies in The Spy Who Came in from the Cold film in 1965, with Alec Guinness and Gary Oldman portraying him in various versions of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.
Now, the cast is building, with Charlie Hunnam and Daniel Brühl signing on.
The novel serves as both a prequel and sequel to le Carre’s two most famous works, the aforementioned The Spy Who Came In From The Cold and Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. It bookends these stories and shows differing points of view from within those stories.
Hunnam is the protagonist, British intelligence officer Alec Leamas. Brühl is East German spy Jens Fielder. Joining them is Devrim Lingnau Islamoğlu as Doris Quinz/Agent Tulip.
This story starts in the shadow of the newly-erected Berlin Wall. Senior British intelligence officer Alec Leamas watches his last agent shot dead by East German sentries and faces the prospect of retirement or a desk job. Then Control offers him a unique opportunity for revenge.
He assumes the role of an embittered and dissolute ex-agent as a trap for Hans-Dieter Mundt, the deputy director of the East German Intelligence Service. In the background is puppet master George Smiley.
Production will begin in the New Year. Stephen Cornwell and Clarissa Ingram are writing, with Silo creator Graham Yost as executive producer.
The show will be on the BBC in the U.K. and MGM+ in the U.S.
