Other than it being set roughly five years after the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, and that it stars Ryan Gosling as a character who must protect a young boy (Flynn Gray), we know next to nothing about Star Wars: Starfighter.

There are rumors that the boy has Force powers, and the destination is the new Jedi Temple, but that is just online speculation.

Speaking with the On Film… With Kevin McCarthy podcast, Shawn Levy confirms that the third act has developed quite differently as they have been working:

“We had a whole different idea for something in the third act, and then things didn’t align, and I was forced to come up with a new idea. And I’m literally right now shooting that section of the movie. And every day, I’m grateful that the way I was supposed to do it didn’t work out, because the new idea that it forced me to explore is so much better than the original idea would have been.”

Levy also said his movie adheres closest to one of the original trilogy when it comes to tone:

“If I’m being honest, I know the cool answer would be Empire, and sort of the inarguable answer would be A New Hope, but it’s kinda Jedi.

It’s Jedi because of the combination of theme, levity, adventure, heart, spectacle. Somehow that movie just got it right for me.”

The original was a big part of his childhood and the Star Wars movie he watched more than any other:

“[I] saw that movie so many times in a theater, more times in a theater than New Hope and Empire, and it stuck with me. There are moments where I’m on set, and I feel like that kid is with me, in the director’s chair. Like I’m there making his dream come true. It’s absolutely incredible.”

Star Wars: Starfighter co-stars Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, and Amy Adams. The movie opens in cinemas on May 28th, 2027.
