Everybody knew Zootopia 2 was going to be pretty big, but nobody expected this. The animated sequel has recieved a major, major boost from China and set a series of staggering receipts at the box office on its opening weekend.
Remember, China is turning away from everything American as it sets itself up to be the global hegemon for the next century as the West falters. It’s planning to collapse the dollar and sanction-proof itself and its allies through a BRICS alternative, invade Taiwan, and dare others to do anything about it, while snaring most of the world’s rare earth materials needed to build just about anything advanced.
All this faded into irrelevance for Hollywood, which was happy to get on its knees and open wide in pursuit of the Renminbi. Until China told them to f*ck off as well.
In a wave of nationalistic fervour that favoured domestic movies and propelled Chinese releases to the top of the global box office, they pretty much rejected all recent American releases.
This changed Zootopia 2.
The Disney sequel took in $272 million from Wednesday to Sunday in China alone. It grabbed $104 million on Saturday, which means it beat Avengers: Endgame for the biggest single-day opening for an American movie out there.
This dwarfed the US box office of $156 million domestic over the five-day holiday. Add in the $127 million from other overseas territories, and it is sitting at $556 million. This makes it the highest global animated opening of all time, and this year’s highest debut.
All down to the Chinese box office boosts. Hollywood executives are restarting Mandarin lessons and getting new kneepads fitted as we speak.
In second place came the high-triggered, bisexual pity party that is Wicked: For Good with $93 million, taking it to just over $390 million in week 2, but no signs of any lessons around accountability being learned.
The rest of the top 5 is rounded out by Now You See Me, Now You Don’t, Predator: Badlands, and The Running Man in that order.
