Nintendo have released the first official images of the upcoming The Legend of Zelda live-action movie, due for release in May 2027.
The images show Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link and Bo Bragason as Princess Zelda in Hylian attire. They have pointy ears and everything.
They certainly look the part. Link looks familiar in his green garb, and his hair has been appropriately lightened. I can’t see any weapons on him. Zelda is dressed in travelling clothes similar to her Breath of the Wild outfits. She also sports a bow and a quiver of arrows.
This suggests that Zelda is going to play a more active role in The Legend of Zelda movie rather than being a damsel in distress. Fair enough, but in the games, Zelda tends to use magic rather than traditional weaponry. Let’s just hope that this one doesn’t enter girlboss territory. Surely Nintendo won’t make that mistake. Right?
In the video games, Link is famously a man of few words. I hope the movie will be consistent with that, like a Hylian Mad Max. Filming this as live action is ambitious, although much of it is bound to be CGI. Let’s just hope it can retain the feel of the series and not resemble every other generic fantasy of the last few years.
The Legend of Zelda movie is currently being filmed in New Zealand. The plot is unknown. Nintendo has partnered with Sony for this one. If it were being made by anyone else, I would have written it off already, but Nintendo tends to guard their IPs quite closely, so I still have hope.
