By A newly remastered 4K version of the ‘Special Edition’ cut of James Cameron’s Oscar-winning underwater adventure “The Abyss” is coming to cinemas for a one-night-only event on December 6th.
In an official statement, Cameron says: “If you haven’t seen the film before, this is the way to experience it, and if you have, it will be like the first time all over again. So, get out to the theaters and enjoy.”
Earlier this year a 2K version of the remaster was screened as part of Beyond Fest, a genre film festival in Los Angeles, accompanied by a Q&A with Cameron where he teased the 4K UHD release was coming in a few months.
This screening is expected to come ahead of that release which hasn’t been announced yet but likely will be in the coming weeks. The film has notoriously only been available for years as an older DVD print and never made the Blu-ray jump.
“The Abyss” stars Ed Harris as a deep sea oil worker whose ex-wife and the oil platformer’s designer (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio) returns with a SWAT team (led by Michael Biehn) after a nuclear submarine goes missing. Soon after, they uncover a deeper mystery involving an extraterrestrial intelligence.
Several other Cameron films that have yet to receive deluxe, remastered home video editions either – most notably “True Lies” and “Aliens” – which are also expected to be on the way. “Titanic” is coming out on 4K disc next month.
Tickets for “The Abyss” go on sale November 20th.
