By In arguably the first big bit of casting news since the end of the SAG-AFTRA strike, Denzel Washington has become attached to play ancient Carthaginian general Hannibal the Conqueror in a new Netflix film.
The project will reunite him with this “The Equalizer” and “Training Day” director Antoine Fuqua in a currently untitled epic drama being penned by “Gladiator” and “Hugo” scribe John Logan.
The film is based on the legendary tactician and leader Hannibal Barca, widely regarded as one of the greatest military commanders in history. The story is expected to cover the pivotal battles he led against the Roman Republic during the Second Punic War.
He’s most famous for invading Rome while riding a Northern African war elephant. He and the Carthaginians won key victories against the Romans – occupying the majority of southern Italy for fifteen years. He was eventually defeated by the Romans at the Battle of Zama.
Washington was previously attached to an earlier incarnation many years ago, whilst more recently such a biopic has been a dream project of “Fast X” star Vin Diesel.
Fuqua, Washington, Erik Olsen and Adam Goldworm will produce the film which will come some time after Washington finishes filming his role in Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator” sequel which will restart production shortly ahead of a Thanksgiving 2024 release.
