“The Marvels” pulled in $6.6 million in previews at the box office on Thursday, a number considered worrisome.
To put that in comparison, Warner’s “The Flash” film took in $9.7 million in previews when it opened – going on to gross $55 million for its debut weekend.
Thus there’s obvious speculation that “The Marvels,” which has been tracking for a $60 million start, won’t reach that figure. If it doesn’t then it hits the kind of box-office territory that should get Disney worried.
To date, 2008’s “The Incredible Hulk” holds the record for the lowest domestic opening of any MCU title to date at $55.4 million followed by “Ant-Man” at $57.2 million.
It’s a hell of a drop from the $20.7 million that “Captain Marvel” took in Thursday previews ahead of what ended up being a stellar $153 million debut weekend.
The other two films from Marvel this year -“Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” and “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” – managed $17.5 million in previews ahead of opening weekends of $104 million and $118 million respectively
At the international box office, the film is estimated to make $80 million for a global start of $140 million. With these domestic preview numbers, it’s not clear if the film will reach that figure though.
