Well. That went about as well as expected. We have apparently entered an age where neither side of the political debate has any sense of humor left. After grabbing $1.5 billion from Paramount for new South Park episodes, creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone dropped their new season premiere, and the fallout is hilarious.
The episode, titled Sermon on the Mount, heavily features U.S. President Donald Trump. The portrayal is a complete copy of the Saddam Hussein character in their South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut film, featuring the same mannerisms, voice, and even satanic bed-mate.
Everything is a target, including penis size and inability to stop from suing everyone.
All in all, it’s pretty funny in that classic South Park way, completely over the top and in glorious bad taste.
The sensible thing would have been to take it on the chin and laugh along with it. Not in this climate, though. Taylor Rogers, the White House Assistant Press Secretary, issued a statement in response to the episode to Rolling Stone, which said, among other things:
“Just like the creators of South Park, the Left has no authentic or original content, which is why their popularity continues to hit record lows. This show hasn’t been relevant for over 20 years and is hanging on by a thread with uninspired ideas in a desperate attempt for attention.”
In response, Parker and Stone appeared on a San Diego Comic-Con panel and gave a comical apology.
The correct statement would have been:
“The President thought it was pretty funny, you know you’ve hit the big time when you are a character in South Park!”
Then the whole thing is done. It’s got nowhere to go. Instead, yet another battle line appears to be drawn in the ongoing culture wars that some, perhaps naively, thought were coming to an end.
