The next Star Trek movie, whatever form it eventually arrives in, has had a varied and troubled path to the big screen. A few years ago, one of the runners and riders for the next installment was from WandaVision director Matt Shakman.
His adventure was to be a fourth entry in the Kelvin Timeline from 2009’s Star Trek onwards, and was to feature that cast, with all the main players returning except for Anton Yelchin, who sadly lost his life in an accident.
Then the whole thing ground to a halt.
Eventually, Shakman was offered The Fantastic Four: First Steps by his old colleagues at Marvel, and he exited. Everyone just assumed that the project was very early in development when this happened, but in an interview with Variety, Shakman revealed that the project was further along than anyone thought:
“We had stages, we had crew, we were moving ahead.”
He also said the landscape around Star Trek had changed dramatically, and so the sets were taken down, the crew was let go, and a production start date was scrapped. He does hope that someday his ideas make it to the screen:
“The core idea, I think, remains the same. I really hope they get a chance to make that movie.”
The fourth Star Trek movie was rumored to feature the return of Chris Hemsworth as Kirk’s father, from his small cameo role in the 2009 film.
