Walt Disney Animation Studios production workers have voted to unionize with sixty-three employees – including production coordinators, production managers and production supervisors – voting to join The Animation Guild (IATSE Local 839).
Just five voted against out of a total of sixty-eight voters in a National Labor Relations Board ballot. If neither of the parties files an objection to the result in the next five days, they will be certified and bargaining can begin for a first contract.
The Animation Guild wrote in a statement on Twitter: “Congratulations to the production workers at Disney Feature Animation. Today, they voted in an election to be represented by IATSE and TAG. With 96% voter turnout, 93% voted yes.”
The production workers at Disney Animation Studios first announced an intent to unionize in March indicating that Disney had denied their request to voluntarily recognize the group.
This follows on from last month when VFX workers at Disney Pictures voted unanimously in favor of unionizing with IATSE. Weeks before that, VFX workers at Marvel Studios voted to unionize and made a little bit of history in the process.
