Marvel Studios latest Thunderbolts has come in almost exactly at the top end of its projected box office. The studio was aiming for a $70-75 million opening, and according to the Oracle that is Box Office Mojo it is currently at $43.3 million and climbing.

It is getting strong reviews, way above any recent Marvel efforts. Word of mouth may help it get some legs.

Overseas it pulled in $86.1 million, bringing its global haul to $162.1 million, also pretty much bang on the projections.

Sinners came in second with a 28% drop taking it to $33 million in weekend three. It now sits at $237 million worldwide.

A Minecraft Movie just keeps on going. The movie phenomenon grabbed another $13 million. The global total is $873.4 million making it the years highest grossing American film to date.

That total is, however, swamped by the top-grossing movie of the year so far which is Chinese. Ne Zha 2 is over $1 billion further ahead. Yet another area where the balance of power is slowly shifting East.

The Accountant 2 was fourth with $9.5 million and Until Dawn fifth with $3.8 million.

At the interesting end of the scale, Nic Cage’s  The Surfer made $674,000 from a limited release on 884 screens.

Did morbid curiosity drive people to theaters to see Rust? Nope! It made just $25,000 from 115 screens.
