Jon Watts and Christopher Ford, the creators of the current “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew” series, say they already have plans for a second season – but they probably aren’t going to get it going by the numbers.

The series launched December 2nd on Disney+ and is set to wrap its eight episode run this evening (January 14th). Speaking to TechRadar, Watts and Ford were asked about potentially continuing the Jude Law-led “Star Wars” series should it be given the green light.

Watts says that, unlike “The Acolyte,” this series was made to wrap itself up in one season but leaves the door open for more if it’s desired:

“Yeah, we wanted to make sure this season had a satisfying beginning, middle, and end. But, if people want to see more Skeleton Crew, we’d be happy to make more.

It’s exciting to think about. We’ve mainly been focused on telling this story, but there’s always a chance that they [the kids] could meet some surprising people in the future.”

Ford adds: “We’re dreaming of it [a second season]. We’ve come up with different possibilities, so never say never.” Unfortunately the numbers aren’t adding up in their favor.

According to Nielsen’s streaming data (via The Direct, the series experienced the lowest viewership of any “Star Wars” series premiere in its first week.

The two-episode debut pulled in less than 382 million minutes watched between both episodes which ran for 75 minutes combined. It’s the lowest for any Star Wars show to date.

It’s roughly 20% less than “The Acolyte” which launched with a combined 77 minute two episodes but still managed considerably more at 488 million minutes. “The Book of Boba Fett” launched with just 389 million minutes but that was from one 37 minute episode. Neither of those shows are getting second runs.

Nor has there been a subsequent post-premiere ratings surge as the series’ third episode didn’t make the Nielsen Top 10 – charting below 306 million minutes for the week of December 9th-16th when three episodes were available.

Reviews for the series overall have been fairly positive, but it’s not generating the engagement or chatter that even the panned “The Acolyte” did last year.
